Jasmine Garcia

Tempe, AZ

Passionate About:

My name is Jasmine Garica, I am an undergraduate student at Arizona State University studying Biochemistry with the goal of going on to medical school to become a physician. In addition to my studies I volunteer at a hospice and respite center for children and at a low socioeconomic family dinner center providing tutoring and activities for children. What initially attracted me to GMB was the correlation between my volunteer efforts at Saint Vincent de Paul which has recently been intaking refugees from South America, especially Honduras, and GMBs mission destination. GMB emphasizes that healthcare should be “boundless”, meaning no person should be without access to healthcare due to any circumstance, and this ideal is something I hold very close to my heart. I believe my involvement with GMB will expand my awareness of other cultures and help me to have a more inclusive approach as a future medical provider.

Volunteer Activity Message

Global Brigades offers Medical TeleBrigades, a virtual international medical volunteer program for people who care about equitable access to healthcare. During a Medical TeleBrigade, participants have the opportunity to apply and build upon their medical knowledge through skill-based volunteering, foster cultural competency through virtual immersion, and deliver real impact through our local team in Honduras by participating in live medical urban clinics and supporting rural clinics. TeleBrigades align with/fit in/supports Global Brigades’ initiatives to actively break down the barriers that people living in Honduras face by allowing them to attain proper medical services regardless of their location or socioeconomic status. Rural clinics reach partner communities on a quarterly basis, while our urban clinic provides daily services and facilitates professional medical care and access to medicine at low cost. All year round, our in-country team maintains relationships with the communities to provide follow-up and to conduct Community Health Worker (CHW) trainings to empower local leaders to sustain a consistent level of healthcare. Electronic patient records are collected for future visitations and to monitor overall community health trends.
