Sac State Medical Outreach trip to Peru, August 2017

Morina's Message

One of my favorite quotes is by Mahatma Gandhi where he says, “be the change that you want to see in the world.” I truly believe that the best way to make a change is to start with yourself and lead by example. Always have purpose and integrity in your actions. This mindset was instilled in me at very young age. Having been raised by parents that came to the United States as refugees made me realize how far a helping hand could take someone. More importantly, it made me realize how much I had compared to those in third world countries. For this reason, I have always had the utmost desire to do humanitarian work overseas.

One of the best ways you can help someone is to give them the gift of good health; whether it is by educating them about ways to stay healthy or providing medical care. As a biology student and aspiring medical professional, I can do both things. I have the gift of educating the public about their health while providing them with essential medical services. I feel very blessed for every opportunity in my life that allows me to pursue this passion.

When I stumbled upon the Volunteers Around the World club, I could not have been more excited. I want to attend this trip because it will give me a different perspective on healthcare. I feel that it is very important for all healthcare professionals to be well rounded. Cultural competence is essential for a healthcare professional to empathize with the patient, which can enhance the healing process altogether. In addition to this , I know that this trip can help me grow as an individual. Please help me to help those in need!

Thanks for taking the time to read this!

Volunteer Activity Description

Join the Sac State chapter as they lead a Medical Outreach trip to Peru this upcoming summer! Volunteers will work in mobile medical clinics, where they will have the opportunity to intake patients, conduct public health surveys, take vitals, shadow local physicians, work in the pharmacy, teach education classes, and much more! If you’re interested in joining, contact us for more information!

VAW at Sac State will be opening up mobile medical clinics for local communities during their time in Peru.

One of the most exciting and important parts of volunteering with VAW is bringing medication to the less fortunate. In 2016, VAW treated over 35,000 patients and we aspire to treat over 45,000 in 2017. One of the things that make our mobile clinics unique is that we not only triage and diagnose patients, but also provide them with the basic medications needed. Fundraising for medications is a huge part of creating a successful mobile clinic to help the local communities with effective care.

**Note: airfare goal will be updated once flights are purchased, tentatively the week of April 4.
