Hampton Medical Outreach trip to Vietnam, May 2018

Matthew's Message

First of all, I am truly appreciative and utterly blessed to even be considered for this opportunity. God has bestowed grace upon , for that I can not thank him enough. 5 years ago, as a high school senior in Advanced Placement (AP) Biology, I could not even imagine being where I am today. At first, I wanted to be in media, then law, and the AP biology class helped me discover my passion for medicine. I found a huge inclination to the body and how it operates, and its many nuances. Fast forward five years later, I am almost done my didactic coursework for my doctorate in Pharmacy, and headed to Vietnam to see first hand how the medical clinics operate in a country far different from my own, to meet people who are much different than those I frequent, to experience a culture that will broaden my perspective on human life and interaction. I could only dream about this as a 17 year old who's brain could barely expand out of the Washington DC metro area. The mere fact, that I am planning on a two-week trip to Vietnam for medicine is breathtaking. I am lost for words, and I am extremely grateful to say the least! Whatever you can donate whether it be big or small, will help. Every cent to every dollar is helpful, and I am grateful all the same regardless of amount. To make this dream of mine become a reality, would be the hugest gift anyone could bestow upon me. I am not one to ask for a new phone, new game console, or anything of that sort. If you could be so kind, help me experience a trip that may change my entire professional career, and moreso, change my outlook on the world as a whole. Thank you.

Volunteer Activity Description

Join the Hampton University chapter as they lead a Medical Outreach trip to Vietnam this upcoming May! Volunteers will work in mobile medical clinics, where they will have the opportunity to intake patients, conduct public health surveys, take vitals, shadow local physicians, work in the pharmacy, teach education classes, and much more! If you’re interested in joining, contact us for more information!

VAW at Hampton will be opening up mobile medical clinics for local communities during their time in Vietnam.

One of the most exciting and important parts of volunteering with VAW is bringing medication to the less fortunate. In 2017, VAW treated over 35,000 patients and we aspire to treat over 45,000 in 2018. One of the things that make our mobile clinics unique is that we not only triage and diagnose patients, but also provide them with the basic medications needed. Fundraising for medications is a huge part of creating a successful mobile clinic to help the local communities with effective care.

**Note: airfare goal will be updated once flights are purchased, tentatively the week of February 1-8, 2018
