SQUADS ABROAD

  • About SQUADS ABROAD
Welcome to the ENROLLMENT and DONATION pages for SQUADS ABROAD on the Empowered.org platform!

Squads Abroad empowers student organizations around the world to improve health and educational outcomes. Our Squads model matches adult-led school groups with community driven sustainable initiatives. Each Squad chooses a defined focus area, volunteer partner organization, and an enrichment project that our groups contribute towards and complete during their trip. Our volunteers provide people-to-people educational support as well as the tangible accomplishment of a much needed small construction project. Squads stay at our safe and private home-base accommodations and are guided by our professional staff from the native country. Squad programs also include fun and engaging cultural activities which provide a deeper cultural context and understanding.

Squads Abroad is a program of Global Brigades, a 501c3 international non-profit that uniquely implements a holistic model to meet community’s health and economic goals. Since 2004, Global Brigades has mobilized tens of thousands of students and professionals through skill-based programs that work in partnership with community members to improve the quality of life in under-resourced regions while respecting local culture.

High School of Health Sciences

High School of Health Sciences is a chapter of Squads Abroad, a non-profit supporting sustainable development goals to improve health and education outcomes in partner communities abroad. As a Global Health Squad, our school works in under resourced communities abroad to increase access to healthcare services, deliver health workshops alongside local students, and builds water and sanitation infrastructure projects that help keep students healthy and attending school. Our group also examines the social determinants of public health in the community through visitations of local health organizations and guest speakers to be able to compare and contrast our health systems at home. Please consider joining our chapter to volunteer with us or donate directly to build more water and sanitation projects that our partner schools have requested.

German International School of New York

The German International School of New York is returning for the second year to volunteer in Costa Rica. The group is led by Spanish teacher Mrs. Ellen Oswald. GISNY students will travel to Costa Rica from January 6-15, 2018. The group will stay at our private and safe home-base accommodations Cartago where our local professional staff provide all transportation, food, lodging, and activities. The group will be matched with a local daycare and elderly care center where they will spend each weekday morning completing valuable small construction projects and staff support. Each afternoon the group will embark on fun and engaging guided cultural and adventure activities around Cartago. On the weekend the group embarked on an overnight excursion to the Arenal Volcano National Park and Rainforest where they enjoy guided nature hikes, hot springs, and an exhilarating zipline excursion.
