Dear Family and Friends:

This January, I will be traveling with a group of forty students from San Diego State University to Ghana, Africa with the organization Global Brigades. Global Brigades is a non-profit, 501c3 organization that travels to countries with great need to provide a variety of valuable services. On our medical brigade, we will travel with six health care professionals and specifically provide medical care to the citizens of rural communities.
Ghana is a unique country to be working in because many people do not know how much poverty and underdevelopment exists there. The average level of education in Ghana is approximately fifth grade, and there are typically no doctors within a twenty-mile radius. Also, families typically have less than three gallons of water per day to use, and 70% do not have access to proper sanitation. We will work in these rural communities to provide comprehensive care to the local members of the communities who need it the most. Our clinic will be serving patients with consultations and basic medications, dental care with extractions, a women’s clinic and basic health education. Without Global Brigades, these communities would not receive any of the services that we will be providing.
Global Brigades is a completely student-led organization that works diligently through nine different programs to provide these underserved communities with sustainable health and developmental initiatives in order to improve their overall wellbeing. San Diego State University has participated in three medical brigades, which traveled to Honduras and Panama and provided care to over 2,000 patients. SDSU has also led a water brigade to Honduras that participated in a project, which provided a community with a clean water system and a latrine.
I want to be a part of the next medical brigade to Ghana, but I cannot do it without your help. Please join me in supporting the work that I will be doing in the underserved communities in Ghana.
