CSU Medical Brigade Aug 2013 Nicaragua

Heidi's Message

A wise man once said, "the best way to find yourself, is to lose yourself in the service of others". Last July I did just that. I volunteered for a medical mission trip in Colombia and fell in love with serving those in need. My passion for medicine really became fine tailored after having the privilege in participating in this amazing mission trip. It was then where I knew, finally, after 27 years of existence, what I wanted to do with my life. I was so inspired in fact, that I started an organization on my campus, the first of its kind, whose sole mission is to deploy medical brigades at least once a year to the several communities in South America and Africa. I am indeed a premed student and after losing my mom to cancer in the last year and a half, I have never been so aware of the value of medicine, education, and helping those who cannot help themselves. So here I am left with an insatiable urge to help our fellow people, those who are either too poor to help themselves or left in countries where health care is a privilege and not a need. This upcoming August I have been presented with an opportunity to go to the country of Nicaragua and serve as a medical volunteer. I am nothing short of ecstatic to be able to be part of such an experience; however, what I am short on are the funds that will enable me to partake in the trip. I stand here asking for any sort monetary donation that will help me build my message in life. After all, your life is your message to the world, so one has to make sure it's inspiring. If you can afford to do so, help me, help others.

Volunteer Activity Description

Volunteers on Medical and Dental Brigades work closely together with licensed medical and dental professionals to provide quality health initiatives to a community that otherwise has limited access to health care. Volunteers spend three days in a community in order to optimize the amount of time patients are able to spend with the physicians and dentists. Each patient receives a physician consultation, public health talk, and prescribed medicines as well as have access to PAP smears, prostate exams and restorative dental care as necessary. Children, in addition, receive teeth cleaning, a fluoride treatment, and vitamins necessary for proper growth and development. Volunteers have the opportunity to take patient vitals, obtain patient history and current symptoms, shadow and assist licensed physicians and dentists, participate in preventative education, and fill prescriptions under a licensed pharmacist. Volunteers will become familiar with the prevalent health issues in their community and learn about how to prevent and treat those illnesses. These brigades provide each volunteer with the opportunity to make a tangible impact on a specific community while gaining real life experience in the field of international medicine and dentistry.
