Northwestern Medical Brigade Sept 2012 Honduras

Emily's Message

This September, I will be joining the Northwestern Medical Brigades Chapter on a week-long trek in Honduras. We will be traveling to a rural compound an hour or so outside of the country's capital, Tegucigalpa, to the El Paraiso region with a team of doctors, nurses and dentists. While my formal duties will include shadowing our medical staff, speaking with patients and fulfilling prescriptions, I will also be using my time in Honduras to gain a greater understanding of how sustainable development can progress in rural regions such as El Paraiso.

As I enter my senior year as an Environmental Science major, I am beginning to explore different career options. As of late, I have taken an interest in sustainable development, disease control, environmental engineering...basically, a desire to reform the way we live to improve the quality of life for everyone, including animals, plants and the Earth! However, my studies have demonstrated that the reformation needed in America is not identical to what is needed elsewhere - studying in Scandinavia, with their effective socialist regime definitely brought this realization to light! I believe that this trip to Honduras with likeminded individuals will lead to reflection on potential reformation programs for Central and South America, starting at the absolute foundation of a functional, sustainable, progressive society -- a healthy population.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions, and if you are feeling generous, consider donating to our cause!

Volunteer Activity Description

Volunteers on the Medical and Dental Brigades will be working closely together to provide quality health initiatives to a community that otherwise has limited access to health care. Volunteers will spend three days in a community in order to optimize the amount of time patients are able to spend with the physicians and dentists. Each patient will receive a physician consultation, teeth cleaning and a fluoride treatment as well as have access to pap smears, prostate exams and restorative dental care as necessary. Volunteers will have the opportunity to take patient vitals, obtain patient history and current symptoms, shadow and assist licensed physicians and dentists, participate in preventative education, and fill prescriptions under a licensed pharmacist. Volunteers will become familiar with the prevalent health issues in their community and learn about how to prevent and treat those illnesses. These brigades provide each volunteer with the opportunity to make a tangible impact on a specific community while gaining real life experience in the field of international medicine and dentistry.
