Highlighted Initiative

Pomona Medical Brigade June 2013 Honduras

Victor's Message

Hey!
First I would like to thank YOU for taking the time to learn about my trip and my ambitions to help make the world a little better and ultimately contribute to society by preparing me for a fruitful career.

Simply, I am planning on going to Honduras in the summer of 2013. I will spend ONE week in a community that has LIMITED access to health care. I along with the Dental and Medical Brigades of Cal Poly will work closely to provide quality health care. Some of the initiatives that will be provided include physician consultation, teeth cleaning and fluoride treatments.

I will be hands-on and participate by taking patients vitals, obtain patient history and shadow and assist licensed physicians and dentists. Also while attending classes to obtain my Minor in Spanish, I will directly work with the citizens of Honduras and experience an opportunity beyond comparison.

Through this experience, I hope to become familiar with the PRESENT health issues in their community
and learn on how to prevent and treat various illnesses. Again, I aspire to do this to grow as a person and to contribute locally AS WELL as internationally. Help me represent Southern California and Cal Poly Pomona.

If you may please donate any monetary value of your choice either $1, $5, $10 or whatever you desire. I thank you NOW and in ADVANCE. GOD BLESS.

Sincerely,

Victor Villegas

Volunteer Activity Description

Volunteers on the Medical and Dental Brigades will be working closely together to provide quality health initiatives to a community that otherwise has limited access to health care. Volunteers will spend three days in a community in order to optimize the amount of time patients are able to spend with the physicians and dentists. Each patient will receive a physician consultation, teeth cleaning and a fluoride treatment as well as have access to pap smears, prostate exams and restorative dental care as necessary. Volunteers will have the opportunity to take patient vitals, obtain patient history and current symptoms, shadow and assist licensed physicians and dentists, participate in preventative education, and fill prescriptions under a licensed pharmacist. Volunteers will become familiar with the prevalent health issues in their community and learn about how to prevent and treat those illnesses. These brigades provide each volunteer with the opportunity to make a tangible impact on a specific community while gaining real life experience in the field of international medicine and dentistry.
