Syracuse Medical Brigade January 2013 Honduras

Tom's Message

Hi Everyone,
During my winter break this year, on January 2nd-8th, I will have the unique opportunity of traveling to Honduras with a group of students and medical professionals with the Syracuse University Global Medical Brigades program. We will spend a week traveling an underserved rural area around the city of Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras, setting up temporary clinics where people can come and receive medical treatment free of charge. Honduras is one of the poorest countries in Latin America with 53% of the population living in poverty. Disease and malnutrition are the leading causes of death in children under 5 years old. Being able to help these people would mean so much to me, and it would truly be a life changing experience. I am writing this because I need your help. The trip will cost me $1625 and I am looking for your help in financing this experience. Any donation would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!

Volunteer Activity Description

Volunteers on Medical and Dental Brigades work closely together with licensed medical and dental professionals to provide quality health initiatives to a community that otherwise has limited access to health care. Volunteers spend three days in a community in order to optimize the amount of time patients are able to spend with the physicians and dentists. Each patient receives a physician consultation, public health talk, and prescribed medicines as well as have access to PAP smears, prostate exams and restorative dental care as necessary. Children, in addition, receive teeth cleaning, a fluoride treatment, and vitamins necessary for proper growth and development. Volunteers have the opportunity to take patient vitals, obtain patient history and current symptoms, shadow and assist licensed physicians and dentists, participate in preventative education, and fill prescriptions under a licensed pharmacist. Volunteers will become familiar with the prevalent health issues in their community and learn about how to prevent and treat those illnesses. These brigades provide each volunteer with the opportunity to make a tangible impact on a specific community while gaining real life experience in the field of international medicine and dentistry.
