Passionate About:

I am passionate about sustainable agriculture and food and social justice movements. In the future, I hope to work towards promoting health on a global scale. I have always been involved in community service, however going on this trip to Honduras would give me an opportunity to get first hand experience in a field that I hope to one day work in. I am majoring in Public Health and minoring in psychology at the University at Albany.

I cannot afford to pay for the trip alone. I would really appreciate any donations towards my trip.

University at Albany Medical Brigade May 2016 Honduras

Taina's Message

I attend the University at Albany. I am majoring in Public Health and minoring in psychology. I am passionate about sustainable agriculture and food and social justice movements. In the future, I hope to work towards promoting health on a global scale.

This May, I would like to travel with a group of students from the University at Albany and Cornell University to Honduras with an organization called Global Medical Brigades. Global Medical Brigades is part of the world’s largest student-led health and sustainable development organization called Global Brigades. Each year Global Brigades mobilizes thousands of university students around the world to participate in 9 different skills-based programs to improve the quality of life in under-resourced communities.

The basic needs of education, health care, and clean water are luxuries for the majority of the people in Honduras, and in the rural communities where we will be working, these luxuries are even harder to find. It is highly common for a family of four to live on less than $2.00 a day with less than 3 gallons of water per day available for use.

If I were to travel on this brigade, I would be working hand-in-hand with doctors and community members. Global Medical Brigades has treated over 10,500 patients in rural, undeserved communities of Honduras that otherwise would have no access to medical care.

I cannot afford to pay for the trip alone. I would really appreciate any donations towards my trip.

This site is completely secure and all donations are tax-deductible. After you make a donation, you will automatically be emailed a tax receipt.

Volunteer Activity Description

Global Brigades offers 7-9 day Medical Brigades throughout the year in Honduras, Panama and Nicaragua. During a Medical Brigade, volunteers have the opportunity to take vitals and patient history in triage, shadow licensed doctors in medical consultations, and assist in a pharmacy under the direction of licensed pharmacists. Each of our partner communities receives a brigade approximately twice a year. Between brigades, our in-country team maintains relationships with the communities to provide follow-up and to conduct Community Health Worker (CHW) trainings to empower local leaders to sustain a consistent level of healthcare. Electronic patient records are collected for future visitations and to monitor overall community health trends.
