Volunteer Activity Description

End Date: May 22, 2013 6:30 PM

A social enterprise is an organization that utilizes market-based business principles to solve social and environmental challenges. Social enterprises can be structured as a for-profit or non-profit entity, but the focus of proceeds should be distributed back into the mission and not to shareholders.

Social enterprises help create a better world by utilizing market principles to create and sustain organizations. Rather than relying on traditional fund-raising, social enterprises adopt a market perspective to achieve their goals. This approach leads to a pro-social organization that is financially sustainable and has the potential to be scaled up rapidly.

The certificate is made up of three intensive courses that build upon each other to develop participants’ ability to understand the convergence of the nonprofit and for-profit industries, new techniques and tools to optimize organizational effectiveness and ultimately empower participants to create a new or scale an existing pro-social initiative.
