UCONN Medical Brigade Jan 2013 Nicaragua

Patricia's Message

Hello everyone!

My name is Patricia Madrio, a freshman nursing major and Spanish minor at the University of Connecticut. I, along with a group of students, dentists, and physicians, will be heading down to Nicaragua from January 5th-13th , 2013 to go on a medical/public health brigade to offer medical, financial, and dental aid to those in a community who have close to no access to proper healthcare.

I am hoping to raise $1,680 for this trip in order to pay for my plane ticket as well as to buy medical supplies and medicines needed for the trip. Please believe me when I tell you that I will be extremely grateful for any and all amount of donations made to my name. All you have to do is click the DONATE button on the right hand side of the page and find my name from the drop-down menu.

Thank you for your time! If you have any questions about the brigade, about me, or if you simply want to say hi, do not hesitate to contact me at 203-512-1613 or at patricia.madrio@uconn.edu. It would also be wonderful if you could help me spread the word about this brigade by sharing this page to your friends, family, and colleagues.

Mil gracias,
Patricia

Volunteer Activity Description

Volunteers on Medical and Dental Brigades work closely together with licensed medical and dental professionals to provide quality health initiatives to a community that otherwise has limited access to health care. Volunteers spend three days in a community in order to optimize the amount of time patients are able to spend with the physicians and dentists. Each patient receives a physician consultation, public health talk, and prescribed medicines as well as have access to PAP smears, prostate exams and restorative dental care as necessary. Children, in addition, receive teeth cleaning, a fluoride treatment, and vitamins necessary for proper growth and development. Volunteers have the opportunity to take patient vitals, obtain patient history and current symptoms, shadow and assist licensed physicians and dentists, participate in preventative education, and fill prescriptions under a licensed pharmacist. Volunteers will become familiar with the prevalent health issues in their community and learn about how to prevent and treat those illnesses. These brigades provide each volunteer with the opportunity to make a tangible impact on a specific community while gaining real life experience in the field of international medicine and dentistry.
