St. Olaf Medical Brigade January 2013 Honduras

Madeleine 's Message

I am going to Honduras as part of the St. Olaf College chapter of Global Medical Brigades this coming February. I will be traveling with 26 other students and 3 doctors to rural Honduras to set up a medical clinic. As part of the trip medications and dental supplies are purchased and taken down to Honduras. These supplies are costly and therefore it is vital that our brigade receive donations to provide for the supplies. This trip is a way for me to make a sustainable difference in Honduran lives, I am able to use my Spanish, teach others about healthy living practices, and help provide much needed medical care. Most times the patients we see do not have regular access to medical care and we are their only source of medical care. This is something I am very passionate about and I can make a sustainable difference in communities in Honduras. In order for me to go on the trip I need donations to fund it. So I thank you for all your support and help, you are really making a difference in the lives of Hondurans as well.

Volunteer Activity Description

Volunteers on Medical and Dental Brigades work closely together with licensed medical and dental professionals to provide quality health initiatives to a community that otherwise has limited access to health care. Volunteers spend three days in a community in order to optimize the amount of time patients are able to spend with the physicians and dentists. Each patient receives a physician consultation, public health talk, and prescribed medicines as well as have access to PAP smears, prostate exams and restorative dental care as necessary. Children, in addition, receive teeth cleaning, a fluoride treatment, and vitamins necessary for proper growth and development. Volunteers have the opportunity to take patient vitals, obtain patient history and current symptoms, shadow and assist licensed physicians and dentists, participate in preventative education, and fill prescriptions under a licensed pharmacist. Volunteers will become familiar with the prevalent health issues in their community and learn about how to prevent and treat those illnesses. These brigades provide each volunteer with the opportunity to make a tangible impact on a specific community while gaining real life experience in the field of international medicine and dentistry.
