Mississippi State Medical Brigade May 2018 Honduras

Kate's Message

Hi All,

I have been presented with an incredible opportunity to travel to Honduras with the Global Brigades in May. Global Brigades connects volunteers to third world communities to assist in improving health and economic development. My trip will be taken with other Mississippi State University students, doctors and dentists to provide mobile medical clinics. I will be doing triage, taking vitals, entering patient information into the physicians software, shadowing doctors, educating community members on oral hygiene, malaria prevention and other needed topics, and more. At the end of the Brigade, volunteers will have a chance to address some of the causes for the medical issues seen during the clinics, by building in-home public health infrastructure for families, such as latrines, concrete floors and eco-stoves and assisting in the construction of a community water system.
I am thrilled to have been given this opportunity to help other people while expanding my medical knowledge in the process. For every 1 person Global Brigades sends to Honduras, 60 people receive access to medical care.

I need to raise $2180.00 to obtain this goal. If anyone is willing to help me (any amount would be extremely helpful), I would be so grateful. Feel free to contact me with any questions!

Volunteer Activity Description

Global Brigades offers 7-9 day Medical Brigades throughout the year in Honduras, Panama and Nicaragua. During a Medical Brigade, volunteers have the opportunity to take vitals and patient history in triage, shadow licensed doctors in medical consultations, and assist in a pharmacy under the direction of licensed pharmacists. Each of our partner communities receives a brigade approximately twice a year. Between brigades, our in-country team maintains relationships with the communities to provide follow-up and to conduct Community Health Worker (CHW) trainings to empower local leaders to sustain a consistent level of healthcare. Electronic patient records are collected for future visitations and to monitor overall community health trends.
