Harvard Medical/Public Health Brigade Jan 2015 Nicaragua

Jenny's Message

My name is Jenny Lai, a sophomore at Harvard and Fundraising director for the Harvard chapter of Global Medical Brigades (GMB). This January, a group of about 45 Harvard students under the supervision of Dr. Clifford Lo (Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School) will travel to Nicaragua to participate in a Global Medical Brigade, one of the nine Programs of Global Brigades, Inc., a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and the world’s largest student-led international relief organization. It sends more than 5,000 annual volunteers to developing countries to participate in construction, dental, public health and medical brigades. The Harvard chapter of Global Brigades systematically works with more than 300 other university groups around the world to deliver and implement programs that benefit more than 400,000 community members annually through Global Medical Brigades. GMB develops sustainable health initiatives and provides relief where there is limited access to healthcare. Each community receives a brigade every 3 to 4 months where hundreds of patients are treated, have their information recorded, and attend public health workshops led by student volunteers at no cost. The mission of the Harvard Global Brigades is to educate future healthcare providers and leaders in the sustainable and human-rights based practice of medicine, global health, and public health. The crux of our program is this annual trip in January that allows selected students to deliver healthcare to rural inhabitants with medication we ourselves collect through fundraising.
I would greatly appreciate any support to help me attend this brigade! Your donation will help support facilitate sustainable health solutions for communities of need. Thank you so much!

Volunteer Activity Description

Global Brigades offers 9-day Medical and Public Health hybrid brigades for volunteers to participate in throughout the year. During the medical brigade component, volunteers have the opportunity to take vitals and patient history in triage, shadow licensed doctors in medical consultations, and assist in a pharmacy under the direction of licensed pharmacists. Each of our partner communities receives a brigade approximately twice a year. Between brigades, our in-country team maintains relationships with the communities to provide follow-up and to conduct Community Health Worker (CHW) trainings to empower local leaders to sustain a consistent level of healthcare. Electronic patient records are collected for future visitations and to monitor overall community health.

The Public Health component of the hybrid brigade achieves prevention and education by implementing in-home infrastructure projects, providing health education, and engaging community members. Each student group will work with individual families, local schools, and community leaders with a focus on holistic and preventative health measures on both an individual and community-wide scale.
