Passionate About:

The immediacy of medicine compels me! Not only does the provision of care positively affect a patient, but it also brings a great sense of purpose to me. I can not think of a better way to help someone than to offer healthcare that he or she would otherwise not be able to receive.

Kansas City Medical Brigade Dec 2012 Honduras

Gabriel's Message

I'm headed to Honduras! Under Global Brigades, a well-organized (501(c)3 tax deductible) non-profit, I am safely traveling to a rural community in Honduras. While there, I will work closely with local community organizations and volunteers, to provide healthcare to an indigenous population that would otherwise not be able to receive such care. Indeed, without Global Brigade's rural outposts, people would have over a day's walk to the nearest clinic.

How does it work? Global Brigades puts the word out to the local community before our arrival. When we arrive, we sync our laptops to Global Brigade's computer system, which gives us electronic medical records, offering continuity of care through the different Brigade chapters. We work alongside local translators, educators, and doctors, as well as bringing these invaluable resources along ourselves. After hearing the patient's medical complaint and performing a physical examination, the patient will be given a treatment plan, prescribed medication, and treated on site. If necessary, they can be triaged to a hospital. While at our site, patients will receive medical education on topics such as hygiene, obtaining clean water, and malaria prevention. There will also be a dentist and OB/GYN on site.

What better way to make a positive impact on the world than to support our cause?

*Proceeds up to my goal get me to Honduras and back, keep me safe and well-fed along the way, and go towards support staff such as drivers, translators, and security. Any proceeds in excess of my goal go towards purchasing medications.

Volunteer Activity Description

Volunteers on the Medical and Dental Brigades will be working closely together to provide quality health initiatives to a community that otherwise has limited access to health care. Volunteers will spend three days in a community in order to optimize the amount of time patients are able to spend with the physicians and dentists. Each patient will receive a physician consultation, teeth cleaning and a fluoride treatment as well as have access to pap smears, prostate exams and restorative dental care as necessary. Volunteers will have the opportunity to take patient vitals, obtain patient history and current symptoms, shadow and assist licensed physicians and dentists, participate in preventative education, and fill prescriptions under a licensed pharmacist. Volunteers will become familiar with the prevalent health issues in their community and learn about how to prevent and treat those illnesses. These brigades provide each volunteer with the opportunity to make a tangible impact on a specific community while gaining real life experience in the field of international medicine and dentistry.
