Loyola Medical Brigade Jan 2013 Nicaragua

Emmy's Message

Being an International Studies major for 4 years will no doubt broaden your horizon and allow you to focus on issues outside of your daily sphere of influence that will completely fascinate and intrigue you. However, another thing about being an International Studies major, is that it has a habit of inspiring you to the point of a desire to travel. And act to make a difference.

This year, I have that chance: I was lucky enough to become a part of a Global Brigade to Nicaragua in December. Global Medical Brigades is part of the world’s largest student-led health and sustainable development organization called Global Brigades. Each year Global Brigades mobilizes thousands of university students around the world to participate in 9 different skills-based programs to improve the quality of life in under-resourced communities.

Thank you so much for helping me out in one of my boldest and most exciting goals since I started at Loyola. It means the world to me, and you'll be getting updates on the status of our trip!

Volunteer Activity Description

Volunteers on Medical and Dental Brigades work closely together with licensed medical and dental professionals to provide quality health initiatives to a community that otherwise has limited access to health care. Volunteers spend three days in a community in order to optimize the amount of time patients are able to spend with the physicians and dentists. Each patient receives a physician consultation, public health talk, and prescribed medicines as well as have access to PAP smears, prostate exams and restorative dental care as necessary. Children, in addition, receive teeth cleaning, a fluoride treatment, and vitamins necessary for proper growth and development. Volunteers have the opportunity to take patient vitals, obtain patient history and current symptoms, shadow and assist licensed physicians and dentists, participate in preventative education, and fill prescriptions under a licensed pharmacist. Volunteers will become familiar with the prevalent health issues in their community and learn about how to prevent and treat those illnesses. These brigades provide each volunteer with the opportunity to make a tangible impact on a specific community while gaining real life experience in the field of international medicine and dentistry.
