Emory Medical Brigade May 2013 Honduras

Christina's Message

This May 14th – 20th, I will be participating in Emory University’s Global Medical Brigades program to serve in an underserved community of Tegucigalpa, Honduras. We will be working there to set up temporary clinics for people to come and receive medical treatment for free!

Honduras is one of the poorest countries in Latin America with 53% of the population living in poverty. Disease and malnutrition are the leading causes of death in children under 5 years old. The basic needs of education, healthcare, and clean water are luxuries for the majority of the people there, and in the rural communities where we will be working, they are even scarcer. We are entering an era where the community is global, and as global citizens, we must do our part to contribute what we can in helping those in need.

I am particularly excited about this opportunity as it will be my first time serving abroad. As a student, I will not be providing the direct medical care. However, as I am interested in pursuing a career in public health / medicine, I hope that this experience will serve as a reminder. On a more personal l level, I seek to better understand and love my brothers and sisters who are living in an entirely different context than myself. We love because He first loved us. I hope to be stretched and challenged.

That said, in order for this trip to be a success, I am looking for sponsors to support my trip and mission to help others. The total trip cost is $750 plus airfare, and I must fundraise what I can to support my trip. Additional donations will go directly towards necessary medications and medical supplies needed to run the medical clinics each day.

Volunteer Activity Description

Volunteers on Medical and Dental Brigades work closely together with licensed medical and dental professionals to provide quality health initiatives to a community that otherwise has limited access to health care. Volunteers spend three days in a community in order to optimize the amount of time patients are able to spend with the physicians and dentists. Each patient receives a physician consultation, public health talk, and prescribed medicines as well as have access to PAP smears, prostate exams and restorative dental care as necessary. Children, in addition, receive teeth cleaning, a fluoride treatment, and vitamins necessary for proper growth and development. Volunteers have the opportunity to take patient vitals, obtain patient history and current symptoms, shadow and assist licensed physicians and dentists, participate in preventative education, and fill prescriptions under a licensed pharmacist. Volunteers will become familiar with the prevalent health issues in their community and learn about how to prevent and treat those illnesses. These brigades provide each volunteer with the opportunity to make a tangible impact on a specific community while gaining real life experience in the field of international medicine and dentistry.
