Global Health Summer Internship Honduras

Joshua's Message

To cover the cost of the program fee and flight I will need to raise $3,100 total.

This July, I will have the unique opportunity of traveling to Honduras as a Global Health Intern with Global Brigades. We will spend a month traveling to underserved, rural areas around the city of Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras, participating in medical clinics, dental clinics and public health brigades to help improve the health of the community. We will also be conducting research in the communities to continue the work that Global Brigades has begun to make sure the work so far is meeting the needs of the community. Yet this is still barely scratching the surface of what we can do and we are working hard to bring even more aid to those who need it most.

Honduras is one of the poorest countries in Latin America with 53% of the population living in poverty. It is cited by the World Bank as the 3rd poorest country in the Western Hemisphere after Haiti and Nicaragua and has been designated as a priority country by the Pan American Health organization/WHO Strategic Plan. The basic needs of education, health care, and clean water are luxuries for the majority of the people there, and in the rural communities where we will be working, these luxuries are even harder to find. It is highly common for a family of four to live on less than $2.00 a day with less than 3 gallons of water per day available for use.

Why Participate in the Internship?

From a 2012 Summer Intern-

\\\\\\\"For the first several weeks after I got home from the internship, I was unable to talk about anything else. I told anyone and everyone who would listen everything I had done, learned, and experienced. Spending a whole month in Honduras working with Global Brigades and getting a glimpse of its long-term successes inspired me and brought me alive. And from conversations with my fellow interns, I know they felt the same transformation and the same desire to share their experience when they returned home.\\\\\\\"
