About Us

Oaks Christian School aims to provide access to clean water in rural under resourced communities through applying STEM skills. Our student volunteers work alongside local engineers to assess, design, and construct infrastructure projects that range from rainwater harvesters that supply drinking water for local schools to large scale community-wide water systems that pipe water directly into households. Each of our student volunteers has a donation goal to help cover logistical expenses while abroad such as transport, local staff, meals, insurance, accommodations, but most important, the year-round follow-up to our project by local staff to ensure the sustainability over time. We need your help to reach our goals! Consider donating or joining our next Squad! We are a chapter of Squads Abroad, a 501c3 non-profit working to improve health, education and economic outcomes in the developing world with our parent organization Global Brigades.

Jorge Alvarez Project Materials Donation Fundraiser

Haven Tan is a student at Oaks Christian School who was a part of the Global Brigades Squads Abroad program for two years. In this program, she and her class worked to design a water system for villages in Honduras and Nicaragua. In the final meeting with the Jorge Alvarez community in Honduras, she recognized that there was still a need to cover the funds to implement the water system that her class had designed. To help with this, she is starting a project where she will teach girls in communities near her how to work the CAD computer design system so that through their learning, they can laser print products to be sold to raise money for the Jorge Alvarez village. Buying these products along with donating individually can aid Jorge Alvarez village in implementing a system that would bring them clean water and move them forward towards reaching Global Brigades' Holistic Model. Global STEM Squads mobilizes students abroad to improve access to clean water in rural under resourced communities through applying STEM skills. Volunteers work alongside local engineers to assess, design, and construct infrastructure projects that range from rainwater harvesters that supply drinking water for local schools to large scale community-wide water systems that pipe water directly into households. STEM Squads is a program of Global Brigades, a highly recognized international development organization that uniquely implements a Holistic Model that targets specific UN Sustainable Development goals within partner communities. Our model systematically builds community ownership and collaboratively executes programs with the end goal of sustainably transitioning to a relationship of impact monitoring.
