Passionate About:

I have a lot of hope in programs that help impoverished communities. I often think about what real charity and justice means. Teaching a man to fish will feed him for a lifetime, rather than giving a man a fish which will feed him for only a day. I'm thankful for this opportunity to participate in the June 2014 Medical/Public Health brigade to Honduras, because it will provide the urgent care of physicians and medications as well build long term infrastructure that will vastly improve the health of the community.

Polina's Message

Currently, more than 50% of the population lives in poverty, 40% without access to healthy drinking water. The illiteracy rate is the rural communities are approximately 50% with the majority of children finishing school in the third grade. With our joint Medical and Public health brigade, we hope to give primary care access to the regions that most need it, along with building eco-stoves, latrines, water storage units and concrete floors. By improving living conditions we can provide long term sustainable health practices.

Volunteer Activity Description

Medical Brigade volunteers set up medical clinics in pre-identified communities to provide healthcare where access is limited. Each community receives a brigade every 3-4 months and between brigades the in-country team maintains relationships with the communities to provide follow-up and conducts community health worker trainings to empower local leaders to perpetuate a consistent level of healthcare.

Public Health Brigade volunteers work side-by-side with community members to improve heath in their homes through the construction of eco-stoves, latrines, water storage units, and concrete floors. These projects and public health education taught to the communities help to decrease life threatening diseases.
