Martin County Schools Service Club

  • About
The Martin County Schools Service Club will be traveling to Peru on July 14-24, 2018. The group is led by Martin County School teacher Halie Putorek, halie.putorek@martin.kyschools.us. As a Global Education Squad the group will partner with an underserved school in Lima to improve educational outcomes. The group will stay at our private and safe home-base accommodations in Lima where our local professional staff provide all transportation, food, lodging, and activities. The group will be matched with a local school where they will spend each weekday morning completing valuable small construction projects and classroom support.

Volunteer Activity Description
The Cross-Cultural Service Club is a Pilot Program at Sheldon Clark High School committed to serving the Martin County community, and extended global community through service projects and outreach.

Thus far, the Service Ambassadors, 10 of Sheldon Clark’s finest and most ambitious students, have packed lunches that were delivered to over 600 students daily for 6 weeks during the summer, have repainted rooms and floors at the local animal shelter, and have mentored younger students in the counties. These projects, however, are just the beginning. The CCSC has set its sights on Lima, Peru. The Ambassadors hope to serve Lima’s community summer 2018, pending sponsorships.

Due to the economic instability of our region, due to job loss, predominantly, we are seeking sponsors that can financially support ONE OR MORE student for the trip.

The FULL cost for one student is $3,200 which includes: room and board in a 24/7 secured compound, three meals a day, ALL transportation, trip insurance, and access to emergency services should they be necessary.

Each student’s fees also include intangibles such as: global perspectives, cross-cultural understanding and communication, sustainable service experience, critical thinking practice, cultural and language lessons in-country, and the opportunity to expand and transform their life’s trajectory by investing in the lives of others – both here in Eastern Kentucky and beyond.

Global Education Squads improve educational outcomes by creating inspiring learning spaces in schools. The group contribution will go directly towards an infrastructure project the group will complete while serving in an underserved school in Lima. The group will help construct inspiring learning spaces in the school by providing infrastructure such as book shelves, storage facilities, desks, chairs, bulletin boards, and more. The group will also volunteer in the classroom and provide individual and small group tutoring and support to the teachers as needed.
