Jennifer 's Message

The decision to join the brigade came a year after my mother and step-father separated, which left the question of who would my two younger siblings live with? The experience of having to find a lawyer and searching for assistance was difficult and tiring. It was months of stress, unhappiness and it felt as if everywhere we looked no one was willing to help. At the end, my mom attended court alone because lawyer fees were high and unaffordable. We also did not qualify for pro-bono assistance. Having gone through this experience made me realize how challenging the system can be and not everyone receives the help that they should get. Not having legal advice and a lawyer to represent us impacted the outcome of our case. Today, if I am lucky I get to see my siblings once a month. Overall, my goal when going to Panama is to help prevent family separations, ensure that everyone has an equal opportunity in defending and fighting for what is theirs. No one should have to go through separations, child custody or divorce alone.

Volunteer Activity Description

Global Brigades offers a 7 day Human Rights Brigade for volunteers to participate in throughout the year in Panama. Human Rights Brigades volunteers work with Panamanian lawyers to provide pro-bono legal consulting to rural communities. Volunteers offer services through a free legal clinic, where volunteers shadow and assist lawyers as they provide legal consulting to community members. Volunteers also work to incorporate unregistered communities to empower them with rights and government benefits that they would not have received otherwise. Human Rights Brigades primarily works with rural communities that are under resourced and largely unaware of their legal rights. Additionally, volunteers provide legal capacity building workshops on various legal concepts to empower communities through education. Between brigades, Global Brigades’ in-country staff works to secure legal outcomes and provide follow-up to the community.
