UCSB Human Rights Brigades June 2013 Panama

Diana's Message

Hello everyone!! I am very excited to be apart of this amazing club and program. Under, there is information of GB in general, but I wanted to share a little but about why I joined. As corny as it sounds, in my final year here at UCSB I wanted to do something that I felt would make a difference in the world, even in a small way. I wanted also to be apart of something at UCSB that was different from anything that I had done before, like Alpha Chi Omega or going abroad. When I first heard about GLB I was immediately attracted to the idea and excitedly signed up, called my mom and let her know that Panama was now on my summer plans. I am now apart of the UCSB GLB executive board, as co-Education Chairman. As time goes on and I get more involved and in this program I will be updating all on how my exec position is going and what it exactly entails. For now, I thank you for the time you spent reading this and for any and all donations that you are able to make on my behalf. *Remember, they are a tax write off :)

Volunteer Activity Description

Human Rights Brigades volunteers work with Panamanian lawyers to provide pro-bono legal consulting through a 7 day brigade in Panama. Human Rights Brigades provides services to remote communities, on a family by family basis. By focusing on the families of one community at a time, volunteers can not only shadow and assist lawyers as they provide legal consulting to community members, but also take an active role in providing legal assistance on a personalized scale. Human Rights Brigades primarily works with remote communities that are under resourced and largely unaware of their legal rights.Volunteers lead legal education workshops tailored to the community on various topics such as: the land titling process, government institutions, family law, property rights, business rights, conflict resolution, etc. Student are able to put their legal research to practice and shadow lawyers in developing solutions to various legal problems. The brigade experience is a life changing experience for both the community members and our student volunteers!
