Sustainable Development Summer Internship Honduras

Brittany's Message

My name is Brittany Fulks and I am currently in my fourth year at SDSU as a Liberal Studies major. I have wanted to be a teacher for as long as I can remember, and I have specifically had the desire to work with underprivileged children that often times do not receive the quality education and attention that they deserve. I have also had an interest in teaching English abroad in Central America and hope to pursue that soon after receiving my credentials. As well as earning my Bachelor’s Degree in Liberal Studies I will have also earned my TESL/TEFL credentials and bilingual credential in Spanish. This program seemed like the perfect fit for me because it allows me to work with children in impoverished cities in a spanish speaking country.

With that in mind, when I heard about Global Brigades- the impact the program has had on the world and on university students in terms of getting out there and helping to make a difference- I was extremely interested in getting involved. I think that this internship provides a student with an intriguing mixture of assessment, research, and volunteering that is deeply rooted with the community being serviced, which makes it unique compared to other programs that tend to focus in one particular area. I think one of the most attractive aspects of this program is the ability to develop our own initiative and work to provide a solution to the problem at hand. Gaining insight into the manners in which a group such as Global Brigades is able to be successful, and all the behind the scenes work it takes to bring all of the services and aide to each country is an experience that would provide me with powerful knowledge and tools that could help me to be successful in my own future in terms of helping others. In addition to the knowledge I would gain from working and researching my own initiatives, I would be given the opportunity to immerse myself in the Spanish language further as well as living and becoming a part of a different culture.

Why Participate in the Internship?

From a 2012 Summer Intern-

\\\"For the first several weeks after I got home from the internship, I was unable to talk about anything else. I told anyone and everyone who would listen everything I had done, learned, and experienced. Spending a whole month in Honduras working with Global Brigades and getting a glimpse of its long-term successes inspired me and brought me alive. And from conversations with my fellow interns, I know they felt the same transformation and the same desire to share their experience when they returned home.\\\"
