I am so excited to have the chance to travel to Ghana this August to further the Global Health initiatives of Global Brigades in the rural communities of the area!
As an intern for Global Brigades this summer, I will be able to combine my academic goals with my desire to better understand societal advancement that approaches equality so that the work we do has a lasting impact. As an aspiring public health professional, I believe that it is imperative that I understand the role of public health in underdeveloped communities (domestic and international) and learn more about the work of non-profits in such sustainability. Wherever I go, I will have to overcome obstacles including cultural differences, language barriers, and a short time span to make my time and efforts worthwhile, hurdles I know that are not limited to GB brigades. I hope that an internship will be akin to a public health project that I might work on as a professional, and will be sure to make the most of the opportunity. Personally, I will be able to work in a community that I can learn from and apply my understanding of public health and social justice to. I also look forward to sharing the experience with my fellow classmates to increase awareness of the influence of public health and grow GB as an organization at UT the way previous interns have.
