Pitt DSD Mission Trip to the Dominican Republic 2017

Alexa's Message

Now that I am in my third year of studies at University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine I am past the halfway mark to achieve my childhood dream of becoming a dentist. I have always had a passion for travel and loved the idea of utilizing my profession to help underserved people across seas and country boundaries access and receive care that they otherwise would not acquire. Through the professional fraternity, Delta Sigma Delta, at Pitt Dental I am fortunate enough to have the opportunity to do this earlier in my life than I ever anticipated. Through my mission trip to the Dominican Republic April 29th-May 7th I will be able to practice and refine my skills that I have learned over the years while creating a long-lasting memory to always remember why I got into dentistry in the first place: to make people happy. I couldn’t have gotten to where I am today without all of the help and support from all of the people who played a role in my life. I am so grateful for every kind and supportive word I have received over the years. Any donation amount goes a long way, and I thank you all in advance!

Volunteer Activity Description

During our semester break from April 29 to May 7th, we will be joining Bright Island Outreach in the Dominican Republic to provide dental care to the community.

Here is a short video documenting our trip last year
https://www.facebook.com/BrightIslandOutreach/videos

The Bright Island Outreach mission is to provide free dental care to the people of the Caribbean and Central America. Dental professionals and students, and non-dental volunteers deliver treatment, education, and preventive care in remote settings to children and adults with limited access to services. Students treat patients under the direct supervision of dentists and hygienists, who are asked to participate primarily as clinical mentors and educators. With a vision to transform lives and communities, B.I.O. provides opportunities for volunteerism, breaking down barriers to inter-professional collaboration among communities of healthcare professionals in the countries we serve.

Join us in our cause and help us through your donations. Your every donation, be it small or large, will us help greatly and is dearly appreciated.
