University of Oxford Legal Empowerment Chapter Global Brigades United Kingdom

University of Oxford is a chapter of Global Legal Empowerment Brigades, an international movement of students and attorneys providing legal education and financial resources for vulnerable families to resolve legal challenges. Global Brigades offers 7-day Legal Empowerment Brigades year-round in Honduras and Greece. In Honduras, we focus on supporting remote, rural, and under-resourced communities that have limited or no access to legal services. In Greece, our work centers on assisting people on the move, ensuring they receive the international protection and legal support they need. Throughout the week, Legal Empowerment Brigade volunteers will be supporting to increase access to the universal right to justice for refugees and asylum seekers. Partnering with the Greek Council for Refugees and focusing on human rights education, volunteers provide practical legal education that aligns with our mission to increase access to asylum rights. This experience offers a firsthand look at how Global Brigades collaborates with and supports the refugee community in Athens. Volunteers also contribute to capacity-building workshops, educating communities on various legal concepts to empower them through knowledge. Additionally, they will gain insights into how Global Brigades’ holistic model works to empower communities in a sustainable manner. Global Brigades is a US 501c3 nonprofit recognized for its international health and sustainable development work abroad. Through an evidence-based model, we work alongside local staff and community members to build projects that tangibly improve lives in Honduras, Panama, Ghana and Greece. Kambia is transforming global education by enhancing university and college curriculums. Our programs present students with a community challenge and use experts on the ground to analyze and problem solve over the course of a semester whether that is virtual or in-person. Our on the ground staff trains and empowers local community leaders in the formation of (depending on the program Medical Class, CHEs. Public Health, Basic Sanitation Committee, etc) The Basic Sanitation Committee is responsible for carrying out in-home assessments and monitoring the status of the projects. University of Utah is a chapter of Global Business Brigades, an international movement of university students and professionals building economic opportunities in the developing world. We work alongside promising entrepreneurs and experienced year-round staff to create financial opportunities in remote, rural, and under resourced areas of Honduras and Ghana. We work with communities to build community-owned banks to provide access to loans, savings accounts and financial literacy for community members. Virginia Tech is a chapter of Global Public Health Brigades, an international movement of university students working to improve health conditions in the developing world. Through an evidence-based model, we work alongside local community members to build projects that tangibly improve lives in Honduras, Nicaragua and Ghana. Volunteers work with local masons and families to build eco-stoves, latrines, concrete floors, showers, and/or water storage units. To ensure long-term sustainability and maintenance, the Public Health program team trains and empowers local community leaders in the formation of a Basic Sanitation Committee. Water systems are designed, planned, and budgeted with partner communities and local leaders are identified by the community to serve as the community’s Water Council, which collects monthly water fees from households to operate and maintain the constructed water system. It then takes several months of construction by volunteers, staff and community members to complete and can include several large scale components, such as dams and storage tanks in order to pipe clean water to individual homes. In conjunction with our Water Program, Global Brigades also supports communities with healthcare, economic development and sanitation projects, and uniquely implements these programs in a holistic model to meet a community’s health and economic goals.
