University of Virginia is a chapter of Global Dental Brigades, an international movement of students and medical professionals working alongside local communities and staff to implement sustainable health systems. We work in remote, rural, and under resourced communities in Honduras, Panama, Belize, Guatemala, Ghana, and Greece who would otherwise have limited to no access to health care. Each community receives a brigade every 3 to 4 months where hundreds of patients are provided access to dental & medical care and volunteers deliver public health workshops. Electronic patient records are collected for future visitations and to monitor overall community health trends. In conjunction with our Medical & Dental Programs, Global Brigades also supports communities with economic development, sanitation and clean water projects, and uniquely implements these programs in a holistic model to meet a community’s health and economic goals. Conestoga HS is a chapter of Squads Abroad, a non-profit supporting sustainable development goals to improve health and education outcomes in partner communities abroad. El Camino Real Charter High School aim to transform under resourced schools abroad into inspiring learning spaces with improved educational outcomes. Our Squad travels abroad to provide in-class support and hands-on projects that improve learning environments, such as building computer labs and libraries, renovating classrooms, and improving outdoor recreational spaces. Each of our student volunteers has a donation goal to help cover logistical expenses while abroad such as transport, local staff, meals, insurance, accommodations, but most important the year-round follow-up to our project by local staff to ensure the sustainability over time. We work alongside promising entrepreneurs and experienced year-round staff to create financial opportunities in remote, rural, and under resourced areas of Honduras and Ghana. We work with communities to build community-owned banks to provide access to loans, savings accounts and financial literacy for community members. Architecture Brigades at Carnegie Mellon University Global Brigades USA

Architecture Brigade volunteers design and construct schools for communities through a 7 day Architecture Brigade in Honduras. Once a University Chapter expresses their interest, they will be provided with a brief on an upcoming design contest. Chapters than have a limited time to submit their school design into a contest against other university chapters. The community then selects the design(s) that best fit their needs. For the construction of the school, all participating chapters, along with any chapters that just want to construct and not design, come together to help build. Student volunteers can get involved with an upcoming Architecture Brigade by joining a local student chapter on their college campus or creating a new chapter and recruiting a group of students. Architecture Brigades, a program within Global Brigades, collaborates with rural communities in Honduras to alleviate needs in health ad education infrastructure through design and hands-on construction projects.

Environmental Brigades at University of Southern California Global Brigades USA

Environmental Brigades at University of Southern California is a discipline of Global Brigades, the world's largest student-led global health and sustainable development organization. The USC chapter systematically works with more than 350 other university groups around the world to deliver and implement one of nine skill-based programs that benefit more than 130,000 Honduran, Panamanian, and Ghanaian community members annually. Environmental Brigades is a program within Global Brigades. Environmental Brigades volunteers work with rural families and community leaders to improve environmental sustainability and livelihood. During the brigade, volunteers utilize household surveys conducted by Global Brigades staff and face-to-face discussions to connect with the community members and understand their environmental needs, and work alongside them to implement solutions to reforest, farm sustainably, and better manage both inorganic and organic wastes. The planting of native tree species restores the biodiversity and nutrient-cycling directly on the families’ land. By creating and utilizing organic fertilizers and natural pesticides, as well as diversifying the number and placement of agricultural plants, soil nutrients are improved while erosion is minimized. Agricultural yields can be increased without dramatically altering the lifestyle of the rural farmers, while in the meantime, the cost of sustaining the farm can be lessened by breaking away from petrochemical fertilizers. Volunteers will also have the opportunity to educate community members on the hazards of waste burning, as well as the environmental and health benefits of setting up composting along with other waste diversion methods.

Engineering Chapter at University of Guelph Global Brigades in Canada

University of Guelph is a chapter of Global Engineering Brigades, an international movement of university students working alongside local communities and technicians to implement clean water systems in the developing world. Water systems are designed, planned, and budgeted with partner communities and local leaders are identified by the community to serve as the community’s Water Council, which collects monthly water fees from households to operate and maintain the constructed water system. It then takes several months of construction by volunteers, staff and community members to complete and can include several large scale components, such as dams and storage tanks in order to pipe clean water to individual homes. Engineering volunteers specifically work on the design and planning stages of the water projects to ensure that they can later be successfully constructed. In conjunction with our Water & Engineering Programs, Global Brigades also supports communities with healthcare, economic development and sanitation projects, and uniquely implements these programs in a holistic model to meet a community’s health and economic goals. Public Health Brigades at West Virginia University Global Brigades USA

West Virginia University is a chapter of Global Public Health Brigades, an international movement of university students working to improve health conditions in the developing world. Through an evidence-based model, we work alongside local community members to build projects that tangibly improve lives in Honduras, Panama, and Ghana. Volunteers work with local masons and families to build eco-stoves, latrines, concrete floors, showers, and/or water storage units. To ensure long-term sustainability and maintenance, the Public Health program team trains and empowers local community leaders in the formation of a Basic Sanitation Committee. The Basic Sanitation Committee is responsible for carrying out in-home assessments and monitoring the status of the projects.
