Wear sturdy shoes and bring garden gloves and a water bottle.


In January 19st, 2015, the Bay Area will once again celebrate the life of Dr. King while working together to bring a positive change to the lives of the underprivileged. The annual Martin Luther King Day Communities of Peace Program gives all of us an opportunity to remember how Dr. King moved our nation to a higher plateau when he led the civil rights movement. His legacy is found not only in civil rights, however, but also in civic responsibility and uniting people of all backgrounds to act on community concerns.

Hundreds of volunteers will join City of Oakland, City of Oakland Public Works Agency, City Council members, Schools, Urban Releaf, AmeriCorps and many local organizations for the Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service on Monday, Jan. 19, at various sites located throughout Oakland and the East Bay. The main project includes Lakeside Park including ‘The Gardens at Lake Merritt’, where volunteers beautifying the jewel of Oakland.
