What Volunteers Can Do:
Assist Medical Staff at a Clinic
Help in a Soup Kitchen

A Snapshot of Alajuelita
Just five miles from the center of San Jose, the capital city of Costa Rica, is an impoverished community called Alajuelita. The residents of this neighborhood are primarily immigrants from neighboring Nicaragua, who have fled natural disasters, political conflict and lack of economic opportunity in their homeland. The population of Alajuelita is comprised of primarily women and children. Most of them lack health insurance and are unable to afford medical care.

About FIMRC
Foundation for International Medical Relief of Children (FIMRC) operates a free medical clinic in Alajuelita to provide all families with access to medical care. FIMRC provides psychological services and conducts health outreach programs to educate the community about nutrition, hygiene, healthy lifestyles, and preventative care. They also work with a local soup kitchen to provide nourishing midday meals to mothers and children.

Your Contribution
FIMRC’s medical clinic is free for all patients – regardless of whether or not they have health insurance (most do not). Your suggested donation to FIMRC will help cover the daily operating costs – trained and licensed medical staff – vital to helping FIMRC keep their doors to the clinic open to all.
