Human Brigades Trip to Panama
Global Brigades offers 7-day Human Rights Brigades throughout the year in Panama. Human Rights Brigades primarily work with rural communities that are under-resourced and largely unaware of their own legal rights. Throughout the week, Human Rights Brigades volunteers shadow Panamanian lawyers to provide pro-bono legal consulting to rural communities. A free legal clinic provides opportunities for volunteers to not only receive experience with Panamanian legal professionals but also experience first-hand the obstacles to justice and the culture of legal misinformation in rural communities. Volunteers also work to provide capacity building and education-based workshops on various legal concepts to empower communities through education. Additionally, volunteers continue shadowing Panamanian lawyers while they gather important information to initiate the process of resolving family legal cases, many of which have been stalled in Panama's legal system through institutional inefficiencies and the prohibitive high costs of legal services. Between brigades, Global Brigades’ in-country staff works to secure legal outcomes and provide follow-up to the community.

Global Medical Brigades
Global Brigades offers 7-9 day Medical Brigades throughout the year in Honduras, Panama and Nicaragua. During a Medical Brigade, volunteers have the opportunity to take vitals and patient history in triage, shadow licensed doctors in medical consultations, and assist in a pharmacy under the direction of licensed pharmacists. Each of our partner communities receives a brigade approximately twice a year. Between brigades, our in-country team maintains relationships with the communities to provide follow-up and to conduct Community Health Worker (CHW) trainings to empower local leaders to sustain a consistent level of healthcare. Electronic patient records are collected for future visitations and to monitor overall community health trends.

Global Medical Brigades: Honduras
Hello all! I have recently been given an amazing opportunity to gain some real life experience for my future career as a doctor! As a sophomore studying Biology and Psychology, I am always looking for opportunities to put to use all of the hard work and knowledge gained from my education at Stony Brook University. This year, I am lucky enough to be participating in a progam in my school called Global Medical Brigades! On this service trip I have the chance to personally work with under-resourced communities in Honduras to provide medical care. Globa Medical Brigades is part of the world’s largest student-led health and sustainable development organization called Global Brigades. Each year Global Brigades mobilizes thousands of university students around the world to participate in 9 different skills-based programs to improve the quality of life in under-resourced communities. Currently, the health conditions in Honduras are ranked as among the worst in the Western Hemisphere by the World Health Organization. The basic needs of education, health care, and clean water are luxuries for the majority of the people there, and in the rural communities where we will be working, these luxuries are even harder to find. On average, there is 83 physicians, 25 nurses, and 1 dentist for every 100,000 people. Many people need to travel very far just to get to their nearest doctor, which for most, is an enduring and impossible feat. On my upcoming brigade, I will be working hand-in-hand with doctors, dentists, other healthcare professionals and community members. Throughout the years, Stony Brook volunteers have been able to raise $814,602 for 23 brigades, containing a total of 272 volunteers. Yet, this is only barely scratching the surface of what we can do, and we are working hard to bring even more aid to those who need it most. The only thing I have ever wanted to do with my life is make a difference in the lives around me. Now, there is no better opportunity than this to provide my skills, knowledge, and passion for health care to those in need. This experience will not only help me gain meaningful experiences, but also help me become the very best doctor I can be! I truly believe that with your support, I can make a tremendous impact on their lives, and provide something as simple as basic medical care. Please join me in supporting the work that I will be doing in the underserved communities in Honduras. As little as $2 will make a tremendous difference. I sincerely appreciate all of your positive thoughts and support!

Global Medical Brigades- Miami Community summer 2015
Medical Brigades is a discipline of Global Brigades, the world\'s largest student-led global health and sustainable development organization. This Chapter systematically works with more than 350 other university groups around the world to deliver and implement one of nine skill-based programs that benefit more than 130,000 Honduran, Panamanian, and Ghanaian community members annually. Volunteers on the Medical and Dental Brigades will be working closely together to provide quality health initiatives to a community that otherwise has limited access to health care. Volunteers will spend three days in a community in order to optimize the amount of time patients are able to spend with the physicians and dentists. Each patient will receive a physician consultation, teeth cleaning and a fluoride treatment as well as have access to pap smears, prostate exams and restorative dental care as necessary. Volunteers will have the opportunity to take patient vitals, obtain patient history and current symptoms, shadow and assist licensed physicians and dentists, participate in preventative education, and fill prescriptions under a licensed pharmacist. Volunteers will become familiar with the prevalent health issues in their community and learn about how to prevent and treat those illnesses. These brigades provide each volunteer with the opportunity to make a tangible impact on a specific community while gaining real life experience in the field of international medicine and dentistry.

Jumping Drags
Dear friends, I\'m in a group of 19 people going to Panama to work on a Global Brigades (GB) public health site. GB have many permanent sites around the world which aim to improve basic home infrastructure and provide health education to help reduce the incidences of life-threatening, but preventable, diseases in a rural community. We\'re gonna be working alongside community members and local masons, to construct four infrastructure projects: eco-stoves, latrines, pilas (water storage units), and concrete floors. And we\'ll also get time to organise and run workshops which will help educate the locals on the practices of sanitation and hygiene. The money we\'re raising covers building materials, training, accommodation etc and to do this... I will plummet from 300 feet (and six inches) off the ground taking part in the UK\'s biggest bungee jump. I will also be doing this in a dress, heels and a wig (if I can convince them it\'s securely fasted to my head - *brings out the hot glue gun*). Her name will be Coco D\'amol...figure it out. There will be a video, there may be tears, there may be use of sedatives. Any donation (however small) will be welcomed...any additional anxiety support will not go unnoticed.
