Nicaragua Spring Break Trip
I will be volunteering in Nicaragua for my spring break, with families who are too poor for adequate health care. By doing this, Global Brigades sends doctors and students to a school in rural Nicaragua to provide Dentistry, Gynecology, Family care and Pharmacy services. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity which will help me to learn what it is like to help others in a worldly fashion.

Foothill College Medical/Dental/Public Health Brigade Honduras August 2016
Global Brigades offers 7-9 day Medical Brigades throughout the year in Honduras, Panama and Nicaragua. During a Medical Brigade, volunteers have the opportunity to take vitals and patient history in triage, shadow licensed doctors in medical consultations, and assist in a pharmacy under the direction of licensed pharmacists. Each of our partner communities receives a brigade approximately twice a year. Between brigades, our in-country team maintains relationships with the communities to provide follow-up and to conduct Community Health Worker (CHW) trainings to empower local leaders to sustain a consistent level of healthcare. Electronic patient records are collected for future visitations and to monitor overall community health trends.

Nicaragua Medical Mission
This May, I am hoping to travel to Nicaragua with my fellow classmates, professors, and practicing physician assistants from Mercy College’s Physician Assistant program through an organization called Global Brigades. Global Brigades is an international non-profit organization that offers skill-based brigades for volunteers to resolve global health and economic disparities. Their brigades inspire all involved to collaboratively work towards an equal world. Mercy College’s PA program has been traveling to Nicaragua over the past few years, enabling us to form a strong foundation and bond with the individuals we help. A majority of the people who live in Nicaragua do not have access to healthcare, therefore, each year hundreds of families walk for miles to our clinics to be examined and treated. Every year they are incredibly appreciative for all of our time and commitment to improving their health. I am truly looking forward to having the opportunity to make such a life-changing impact on these individuals' lives. I am excited to finally use the abundance of medical knowledge I have learned during my academic year to provide hands-on care in examining, diagnosing and treating patients in need. Please join me in supporting my passion and desire to help others in Nicaragua. Every cent of the money raised will enable me to fulfill my ambition to travel to Nicaragua for 10 days to use my medical knowledge, skills, and compassion to improve the lives of hundreds. All donations go towards program costs such as flights, food, housing, medications and on site transportation. Any support you can provide will make a tremendous difference. As a donor, you are contributing to the sustainability of the Brigades’ work in the communities we are working with, as well as my journey in becoming a Physician Assistant. Please take a moment to watch the youtube video to see the amazing work we will do! I deeply appreciate all of your positive thoughts and support! Thank you for your generosity! Sincerely, Melissa Bennett, PA-S
