Event Description/Leader Message

Event Description:
Hello all!

I have recently been given an amazing opportunity to gain some real life experience for my future career as a doctor! As a sophomore studying Biology and Psychology, I am always looking for opportunities to put to use all of the hard work and knowledge gained from my education at Stony Brook University. This year, I am lucky enough to be participating in a progam in my school called Global Medical Brigades! On this service trip I have the chance to personally work with under-resourced communities in Honduras to provide medical care.

Globa Medical Brigades is part of the world’s largest student-led health and sustainable development organization called Global Brigades. Each year Global Brigades mobilizes thousands of university students around the world to participate in 9 different skills-based programs to improve the quality of life in under-resourced communities.

Currently, the health conditions in Honduras are ranked as among the worst in the Western Hemisphere by the World Health Organization. The basic needs of education, health care, and clean water are luxuries for the majority of the people there, and in the rural communities where we will be working, these luxuries are even harder to find. On average, there is 83 physicians, 25 nurses, and 1 dentist for every 100,000 people. Many people need to travel very far just to get to their nearest doctor, which for most, is an enduring and impossible feat.

On my upcoming brigade, I will be working hand-in-hand with doctors, dentists, other healthcare professionals and community members. Throughout the years, Stony Brook volunteers have been able to raise $814,602 for 23 brigades, containing a total of 272 volunteers. Yet, this is only barely scratching the surface of what we can do, and we are working hard to bring even more aid to those who need it most.

The only thing I have ever wanted to do with my life is make a difference in the lives around me. Now, there is no better opportunity than this to provide my skills, knowledge, and passion for health care to those in need. This experience will not only help me gain meaningful experiences, but also help me become the very best doctor I can be! I truly believe that with your support, I can make a tremendous impact on their lives, and provide something as simple as basic medical care.

Please join me in supporting the work that I will be doing in the underserved communities in Honduras. As little as $2 will make a tremendous difference. I sincerely appreciate all of your positive thoughts and support!
